Islamabad: Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Masood Malik held a press conference on Thursday, outlining Pakistan’s climate change policies and its position on green finance and carbon credit systems globally. The Minister emphasized Pakistan’s resilience and its commitment to tackling climate change for future generations.
Dr. Malik highlighted that 85% of global green finance is directed towards the USA, China, and certain Western countries. He pointed out attempts to impose taxes on Pakistan, stating that the country is not seeking loans but rather investment to grow its green economy. Under Prime Minister’s guidance, Pakistan has established a Green Climate Fund to promote sustainable development and green employment, with finalized regulations to be shared soon.
He reiterated Pakistan’s call for nations with higher pollution levels to purchase carbon credits from countries like Pakistan, which are actively working to reduce emissions. A plan to establish 250 water treatment plants in Punjab was announced to ensure clean water access.
The Minister praised the Sindh Government’s mangrove projects and Punjab Government’s green initiatives, which aim to protect natural resources and provide local communities with clean water and healthcare services. He also announced measures for the Margalla Hills’ protection and restoration, including a pilot project for carbon crediting.
Pakistan is planning to establish a carbon exchange company to facilitate green finance, enhancing its global prospects. The Minister concluded by urging global partnerships and investments in Pakistan’s green projects, aiming for a sustainable and prosperous future for the nation.
