Islamabad, Pakistan has taken a prominent role in global disaster response coordination by assuming the regional chairmanship of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) for Asia-Pacific in 2024. This achievement represents a significant stride in enhancing international collaboration in disaster response.
According to Press Information Department, the official handover ceremony was conducted via video link, where New Zealand transferred the regional chairmanship to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Representing the NDMA Chairman was Mr. Raza Iqbal, Executive Director Plans, who pledged to foster international collaboration and improve disaster response capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Under Pakistan’s leadership, the NDMA has planned key activities to strengthen disaster response, including the 1st International Rescue Challenge in Lahore and the Asia-Pacific Earthquake Response Exercise. These initiatives aim to simulate seismic events to enhance preparedness and coordination in earthquake-prone areas. Additionally, Islamabad will host the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting, bringing together member states to strategize on disaster response initiatives.
Ambassador Dominik Stillhart from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the incoming Global Chair of INSARAG, along with regional chairs from Romania and Ecuador, participated in the meeting. Mr. Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, Chief of the Emergency Response Section and INSARAG Secretary, also attended.
As the Asia-Pacific regional chair, Pakistan envisions a proactive approach to addressing the dynamic challenges of disaster response. The organization sets global standards for rescue teams and promotes international cooperation, ensuring effective and unified responses to catastrophes.
