Islamabad: Pakistan and Denmark have reinforced their commitment to modernize Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure by introducing green shipping and sustainable port operations. During a meeting with Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry highlighted the collaboration’s focus on upgrading ports and integrating renewable energy solutions.
Denmark has pledged a $2 billion investment through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year, with Danish shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk leading the initiative. The investment aims to modernize Pakistan’s ports and improve logistics efficiency. The upcoming visit of Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc to Pakistan underscores the importance of this partnership.
Efforts are underway to introduce green maritime technologies to reduce emissions and enhance environmental efficiency. Minister Chaudhry emphasized the integration of solar and wind energy into port operations to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The workforce will receive training in green shipping practices to manage eco-friendly vessels and facilities.
Adopting sustainable practices will help Pakistan align with global environmental standards, enhancing its export competitiveness in environmentally conscious markets. Energy-efficient vessels and renewable-powered ports are expected to reduce operational costs, strengthening trade relations.
The collaboration aligns with global sustainability goals and is expected to attract foreign direct investment into Pakistan’s maritime and export sectors. Ambassador Linulf reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to expanding its presence in Pakistan’s maritime industry, with both parties agreeing to further explore opportunities in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
