Karachi: In a detailed press conference, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab laid out a series of ambitious infrastructure and service upgrades designed to transform the cityscape and improve the quality of life for its residents. The Mayor’s presentation covered a range of initiatives from flood management and waste disposal to significant increases in the city’s water supply and public transportation improvements.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab presented a one-year performance review that highlighted a revenue collection increase from 1.2 billion rupees to 2.8 billion rupees without introducing new taxes, but by improving collection on existing properties. He detailed a series of major projects including the construction of new bridges, the replacement of old canals, and the introduction of modern garbage processing facilities. Notably, a 75 billion rupee project was recently approved to address longstanding infrastructure needs. Mayor Wahab announced the construction of six new garbage stations and a modern landfill site, costing 10 billion and 12 billion rupees respectively.
The city’s water supply is set to see significant improvements, with the introduction of additional water sources after 20 years and an investment of 90 billion rupees in pumping station enhancements. The Mayor emphasized that these upgrades will benefit the West, Central, and Kemari districts predominantly. Further embracing sustainability, the Mayor outlined plans to shift significant city operations to solar energy, including installing solar lights on three major highways with plans to expand further if the project proves successful.
Mayor Wahab expressed gratitude towards President Asif Ali Zardari and Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for their support in increasing funds, which he promises will be accounted for transparently. He stressed the commitment of his administration to not only report on expenditures but also to ensure that every penny is spent for the benefit of Karachi’s citizens.
