Maritime Minister Forms Committee to Address Port Qasim Water Issues and Outlines Growth Roadmap

Islamabad: Maritime Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced the establishment of a committee to evaluate and address the water issues at Port Qasim, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the port’s operational efficiency and economic impact. The committee, composed of members from the Port Qasim Authority board and its officials, is expected to deliver a set of recommendations by the end of April, including a long-term sustainability plan projected over 25 years.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Chaudhry made the announcement during a visit to Port Qasim, where he was briefed on a range of ongoing and future projects. These include infrastructure upgrades, investment plans, logistics improvements, and the development of a textile city. The minister emphasized the importance of timely completion of these projects to accommodate growing cargo volumes and evolving shipping requirements.

The minister outlined several initiatives aimed at enhancing the port’s capabilities and attracting investment. These include the establishment of a multipurpose terminal and the development of the Eastern Industrial Zone. Additionally, he directed the acceleration of key projects such as a treatment plant and a dual carriageway, which are crucial for improving operational efficiency and managing environmental concerns.

During the visit, Chaudhry also reviewed strategic projects like “Sea to Steel,” which aims to connect maritime trade with industrial development and reduce dependency on imports. He also considered proposals for renewable energy projects, highlighting the potential for wind and solar power to decrease reliance on traditional energy sources.

Positioning the Coastal Economic Zone as a center for industrial and commercial activities, Chaudhry expressed confidence that these integrated efforts will bolster Port Qasim’s competitiveness. He noted that infrastructure modernization, industrial expansion, and investment facilitation are essential components for driving job creation and reinforcing the port’s significance in Pakistan’s blue economy.
