Mamata Banerjee Stands Firm Against New Waqf Law in Bengal

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that her administration will not implement the newly introduced Waqf law in the state, expressing her opposition to the legislation on the social media platform X.

Banerjee’s refusal to enforce the law, passed by the central government, underscores a growing tension between her regional administration and the federal authorities. “We have made our position clear on this matter – we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state,” Banerjee stated, questioning the rationale behind the unrest the law has sparked.

In a plea to maintain peace, Banerjee urged citizens of all faiths to remain calm and avoid being swayed by political provocations. “Do not engage in any unrighteous behavior in the name of religion. Every human life is precious,” she asserted, emphasizing the need for societal harmony amidst the political discord.

Banerjee further clarified that the contentious law was not a product of her party’s policies. “The law was made by the Modi government. So the answer you want should be sought from the Modi government,” she noted, shifting the focus of accountability to the central government.

The Chief Minister also issued a stern warning against those attempting to incite violence, affirming that her government would not hesitate to take strict action against anyone disturbing the peace.
