Karachi: Spokesperson to the Mayor of Karachi, Karamullah Waqasi, has announced a significant development package from the Sindh Government, earmarking over Rs 100.19 billion for the Fiscal Year 2026-2027. This allocation aims to address Karachi’s infrastructure, transportation, and civic issues, promising substantial urban transformation for Pakistan’s largest city.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Waqasi emphasized the commitment of the Pakistan People’s Party and the Sindh Government to Karachi’s advancement. The funds are intended to bolster ongoing projects, enhancing transportation, water supply, sewerage systems, and municipal services, thereby improving life quality for millions of residents and boosting economic growth.
Waqasi detailed that 816 development projects are currently in progress with a cumulative cost exceeding Rs 644 billion and 30 crore. Among these, 167 projects are valued at over Rs 50 crore each, and 110 mega projects cost more than Rs 1 billion. These initiatives aim to modernize Karachi with world-class urban facilities.
Highlighting the Lyari Transformation Package, Waqasi described it as crucial for the development of one of the city’s historic areas. With a budget of Rs 4 billion and 37 crore, this package focuses on infrastructure, roads, drainage, sports, and educational facilities in Lyari.
Significant investments are also directed towards water and sewerage infrastructure, including the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan (S-III), with Rs 1 billion allocated for its continuation. This reflects the government’s commitment to resolving the city’s environmental challenges.
To address traffic concerns, the budget includes key transport projects such as a new flyover from Karachi Airport Road to Star Gate and a right-turn underpass from Malir Halt to Shahrah-e-Faisal. These projects aim to improve mobility, reduce travel time, and enhance economic activities.
Waqasi expressed confidence in the timely completion of these projects, underscoring coordination among government bodies to ensure that Karachi’s residents benefit as soon as possible.
