Karachi Power Tariff Adjustment Sparks Outrage Among Business Leaders

Karachi: Malik Khuda Bakhsh, President of the Pakistan Business Forum (Karachi Chapter), has denounced the recent decision by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) regarding the monthly electricity adjustment for Karachi consumers.

According to a statement by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, a reduction of 1.23 rupees per unit was announced for the November fuel price adjustment. This adjustment falls short of the expectations set by K-Electric’s request for a reduction of up to 4.98 rupees per unit.

Bakhsh highlighted that the tariff adjustment should have resulted in a reduction of 5.0029 rupees per unit. However, consumers received only a fraction of this benefit, leading to a loss of 5.444 billion rupees in expected relief.

The business leader criticized both NEPRA and K-Electric for not fulfilling their promises to alleviate the financial burdens on Karachi’s residents. He argued that the current decision exacerbates the already high living expenses and business costs.

Bakhsh called the situation an economic betrayal, emphasizing NEPRA’s failure to protect consumer rights by not ensuring the full benefit transfer. He urged both institutions to take immediate corrective actions.

He demanded accountability from NEPRA and K-Electric, advocating for transparent and fair future adjustments to directly benefit Karachi’s consumers. Bakhsh vowed to continue fighting for the rights of the city’s citizens and business community.
