Junaid Anwar Chaudhry Unveils Fisheries Research Centre to Boost Blue Economy

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the creation of a fisheries and aquaculture research centre at the Korangi Fish Harbour Authority, aiming to rejuvenate Pakistan’s fisheries sector, which currently contributes less than 0.5% to the nation’s GDP.

According to Press Information Department, the facility will span 10 acres and serve as a comprehensive “Aqua Ecosystem,” integrating the entire fish supply chain from catching to exporting. The centre will focus on enhancing feed efficiency, disease control, and yield improvements, targeting various stakeholders such as fisherfolk, farmers, and industry players. Pilot projects and partnerships with universities and international institutes will underpin the initiative, with a focus on species like shrimp and tilapia.

Junaid Chaudhry highlighted the economic benefits expected from the project, including streamlined value chains and increased seafood exports. The project will incorporate cutting-edge technology like IoT-based Recirculating Aquaculture Systems to enhance sustainability and efficiency. The minister emphasized the facility’s potential to transform the fisheries sector into a multi-billion-dollar industry while cautioning against risks such as water pollution and habitat disruption.
