Investment in National Disaster Preparedness Is Much Better Than Forced Spending in Post-Disaster Management, Says Na Speaker

Islamabad, August 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): Pakistan’s contribution in climate change is less than 1% and still Pakistan is one of the top 10 most vulnerable countries, says NA Speaker Collaboration between Local and International Community is key in implementing Climate Induced Regulations, says NA Speaker National Assembly expressed that effective Disaster Management requires close cooperation among Local and International Stakeholders. Moreover, Pakistan has least contributed to Climate Change but has been extremely affected.” It is essential to positively engage with the Local and International Community on resilience induced regulations and their timely implementation across the regions.” He expressed these views while addressing the Closing Ceremony of EXPO on “Disaster Risks Management” held at Pak-China Friendship Centre, Islamabad.

While appreciating the role of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) for drawing and retaining global focus on Disaster Risk Management related capacity-building, he stated, “Unfortunately, Pakistan is ranked amongst the top ten countries which are the most vulnerable to climate crisis despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions.”

Furthermore, he stated that torrential rains and cloud bursts have disrupted lives of millions of people in Pakistan last year only. On this note to radiate hope and to express gratitude, Speaker NA lauded international community for the timely provision of humanitarian assistance to Pakistan. Speaker NA also mentioned that National Assembly of Pakistan has taken up the issue of natural disaster on an emergency basis and chalked out a national response. He added, “Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs and the Standing Committees on Climate Change have always been at the forefront when it comes to scrutinizing the Government’s Climate Action and Environmental Response.”

Moreover, National Assembly has always taken a lead in highlighting pressing global and regional challenges through vibrant parliamentary diplomacy. While taking about Regional Seminar of the Asia Pacific Parliaments of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Islamabad, he informed that a special fund named ‘Creating a Global Fund for Climate Vulnerable Countries to Address Loss and Damage Associated with Climate Change” has been put forth. In addition, Speaker NA assured that the Parliament of Pakistan would continue to support the comprehensive National Capability to counter effects of Climate Change. While appreciating the efforts of NDMA for developing an indigenous model of national preparedness, he stressed on the need to improve the database archive methods/strategies and the technology-based decision-making capacity.

Furthermore, Speaker NA Raja Pervez Ashraf visited the stalls set up by various Organizations for Disaster Preparedness and appreciated them for coming up with innovative, tailored and indigenous ideas. Speaker NA was pleased to distribute certificates of appreciation among University Students and Academic Experts for their art and projects aimed towards raising awareness on importance of Disaster Preparedness.
