Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, in a message marking World Press Freedom Day, underscored the significance of press freedom and its role in promoting democratic values and transparency. He highlighted the day as a symbol of global commitment to freedom of expression and access to information while paying homage to journalists worldwide for their sacrifices.
According to Press Information Department, Gilani noted that a free and empowered media is crucial to any democratic society, serving as a vehicle for timely and credible information. He emphasized the media’s role in ensuring transparency and accountability, while also raising awareness about the challenges journalists face, including professional pressures and security concerns.
The Chairman Senate commended journalists in Pakistan and globally, stressing the importance of their protection and professional independence for the strengthening of democracy. He reiterated that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees press freedom, with the Senate actively safeguarding these rights through legislation and debates.
Gilani condemned any form of violence or intimidation against journalists, calling for these practices to be discouraged. He also addressed the growing challenges of fake news and misinformation in the digital age, urging the media to maintain truth, research, and national responsibility in their reporting.
Concluding his message, Gilani reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment, particularly the Senate’s, to actively promote democracy and uphold press freedom and constitutional supremacy in Pakistan.
