India to Investigate Alleged Plot Against Sikh Leader in US, Modi Asserts

Karachi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has acknowledged India’s readiness to investigate any evidence related to the alleged plot to assassinate a Sikh leader in the United States. This statement comes in the wake of charges by the US Justice Department against an Indian citizen, implicating an Indian government official in the planning of the assassination.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a recent interview with the Financial Times, Prime Minister Modi expressed his commitment to the rule of law, stating that India would look into any information provided regarding the matter. This marks Modi’s first public comment on the issue, which has drawn significant international attention.

The US Justice Department, in November, unveiled murder-for-hire charges against Indian citizen Nikhil Gupta for his alleged involvement in a failed plot to kill a US citizen of Indian origin in New York City. The intended target, identified as a vocal critic of the Indian government and a leader of a US-based organization advocating for Punjab’s secession, was not harmed due to the plot’s failure. Gupta, residing in India, was arrested under US extradition orders by authorities in the Czech Republic.

This development follows the September statement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who disclosed the involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh leader and Canadian citizen. This revelation had significantly strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India.

Prime Minister Modi’s assurance of an investigation into the alleged assassination plot signifies India’s attempt to address these international concerns and maintain diplomatic relations, especially with key countries like the United States and Canada.
