Agartala: A violent outbreak in Tripura led by a Hindutva mob resulted in the death of a Muslim trader and significant damage to a mosque and several shops. The incident has escalated tensions in this BJP-ruled state, highlighting the volatile intersection of community and religious festivities.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the violence took place in the Kadamtala area, involving extremists from BJP, RSS, VHP, and Bajrang Dal. The confrontation began when a Muslim family en route to a hospital was coerced into donating for the Hindu Durga Puja festival, a demand they resisted. This resistance sparked the subsequent attacks by the mob, characterized by looting, vandalism, and arson.
Eyewitness accounts, including those from local journalist Prsenjit Debnath, underscored the chaotic scenes that unfolded. A video capturing the desecrated mosque with burnt religious texts has spread widely online, stirring widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
In response to the escalating violence, law enforcement officers employed firing and lathi charges to disperse the mob and restore order. Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty stated that eleven suspects have been arrested, with over 700 security personnel from multiple forces deployed to maintain peace in the affected locales.
The events have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, who expressed deep concerns over the integrity of local law enforcement, particularly highlighting the looting of shops belonging to the minority community in their presence.
