Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated a book fair titled “Kitabon Ka Jahan” at the historic Empress Market, emphasizing the significance of restoring and utilizing heritage sites as cultural centers. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has focused on removing encroachments and preserving historic buildings, with Empress Market now serving as a public space for cultural activities.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the book fair marks a step forward in promoting a reading culture and supporting local publishers. Mayor Wahab highlighted the importance of books in fostering knowledge and positive thinking, urging citizens, especially the youth, to develop reading habits. He visited various book stalls during the event, which also saw participation from parliamentary leaders and city council members.

Mayor Wahab addressed the media, underscoring the restoration efforts at the approximately 150-year-old Empress Market and the positive impact of utilizing public spaces for cultural events. He mentioned previous events like the Bohra Food Festival and announced future cultural programs, including a free Qawwali event at Burns Garden.

Responding to critiques from former City Nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal, Mayor Wahab called for fact-based political statements and transparency regarding past budgets and developments. He criticized the inconsistency in political claims and emphasized the need for positive politics to foster Karachi’s development.

In his remarks, Mayor Wahab stressed the importance of maintaining principles and avoiding double standards in politics, citing the need for a constructive approach to address city issues. He referenced the significance of the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan and the changes brought by the Eighth Amendment in addressing administrative challenges.
