HEC Conducts First-ever National Skill Competency Test in 112 Cities

Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has executed the inaugural National Skill Competency Test (NSCT) across 165 centers in 112 cities, allowing students in computing programs to showcase their skills. This initiative aims to enhance skill assessment and career opportunities for students throughout the country.

According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the test was a significant step for students enrolled in the 7th and th semesters of computing programs. The Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunications, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, along with the Federal Secretary for IT, visited the Virtual University Control Centre in Islamabad to receive updates from HEC on the progress of the initiative. The event featured live monitoring of the centers, underscoring the coordination involved in this nationwide effort.

The Minister commended the universities, institutional heads, focal persons, and on-ground teams for their dedication, which was pivotal in the successful execution of the NSCT. Chairman of HEC, Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, also visited the Virtual University and expressed satisfaction with the smooth and efficient conduct of the test, acknowledging the efforts of the Rector and the Virtual University team.

The NSCT, offered free of charge and conducted via computer, aims to integrate IT students into the national IT talent pool, providing them with access to employment opportunities within the IT industry. Students who excel in the test will receive a joint certificate from HEC, the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA). Additionally, successful candidates will earn one academic credit from their institutions and enjoy prioritized access to internships, apprenticeships, and international certification pathways.

HEC had announced the launch of the NSCT for IT graduates in January, marking it as a key initiative to align academic outcomes with the fast-changing demands of the global technology sector.
