Heatwave Alert: Scorching Temperatures to Grip the Nation

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning for an impending heatwave set to affect much of the country starting tomorrow. The weather forecast indicates a high-pressure system will dominate the upper atmosphere from April 13, potentially escalating to severe heatwave conditions in the southern region by April 14.

Daytime temperatures are predicted to soar 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above average in the southern half of the nation between April 13 and 18. Meanwhile, central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan will experience temperatures 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal from April 14 to 18. Warmer nights are also expected during this period.

The Meteorological Department has cautioned that the excessive heat may trigger dust and windstorms, posing risks to structures such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels in susceptible areas. The public is strongly advised to take precautionary measures, particularly children, women, and the elderly.

To minimize heat-related risks, the department recommends avoiding direct sunlight during the day and staying hydrated. Farmers are advised to adjust their schedules according to the weather and ensure the safety of their livestock.

The rising temperatures in the northern regions could also accelerate the snowmelt rate from April 14 to 18, further impacting the region.
