Gandhinagar: The BJP-led government in Gujarat has demolished a religious site and numerous homes in Dwarka district, citing the need to remove illegal encroachments and safeguard national security.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the demolition operation was carried out under significant police presence. It included the destruction of the Hazrat Panj Peer Dargah in Okha, which was claimed to be situated on land owned by the Gujarat Maritime Board. The operation also extended to Bet Dwarka, where approximately 200 homes were demolished over three days, displacing several families.
Bulldozers commenced the demolition early in the morning, leaving many residents unprepared. While authorities stated that notices had been issued, numerous locals reported receiving little to no advance warning. The demolitions prompted scenes of distress, with residents hastily attempting to salvage belongings.
Authorities justified the operation as a measure to protect national security, particularly highlighting the removal of illegal structures on Pirotan Island to preserve the marine ecosystem. Critics, however, argue that the demolitions are a targeted effort against the Muslim community, masked as environmental protection.
The operation’s execution with heavy police deployment has minimized resistance. Although the government claims to have offered compensation, many of the displaced families face an uncertain future.
