Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has declared that the government is diligently working on two fronts: reducing electricity tariffs and ensuring a drug-free society. These initiatives were highlighted during his response to queries in the National Assembly’s Question Hour.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Tarar detailed the government’s comprehensive approach to combat drug trafficking and usage. He emphasized the role of the Anti-Narcotics Force in conducting regular raids against drug traffickers. Furthermore, the minister called on parents and educational institutions to remain vigilant to safeguard children from the narcotics threat.
Tarar stressed the importance of media in driving an anti-narcotics awareness campaign. The government has allocated funds to promote drug awareness through films and dramas and is actively engaging with international partners. Notably, Pakistan has signed thirty-seven Memorandums of Understanding with various countries for cooperation in narcotics control, with additional agreements under revision.
Addressing other issues, the Minister announced the launch of the “My Islamabad” smart city app to improve citizen access to services and detailed enhancements in public transport systems including the upcoming operational feeder route F-11, connecting I-16 to major metro stations.
In the realm of energy policy, Tarar underscored the government’s efforts to alleviate financial pressures on consumers by cutting electricity costs, including terminating and renegotiating contracts with independent power producers (IPPs).
The session also witnessed legislative action with the introduction of two amendment bills aimed at updating naturalization and citizenship laws. Concurrently, the National Assembly adopted a resolution expressing steadfast support for the Kashmiri right to self-determination, condemning recent actions by India in the region.
The house adjourned and is scheduled to reconvene next Monday.
