Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the launch of Punjab’s first dedicated data center, “Punjab Data Lake,” while extending an invitation to Chinese technology companies and investors to explore opportunities in Punjab. The announcement was made during her address at the Big Data Industry Expo 2026 in China.

According to Chief Minister of Punjab, the new data center initiative will feature a state-level common data engine, OneMap, designed to integrate over 12 terabytes of geospatial data from 31 departments into a cohesive system. The OneMap system aims to assist in planning, resolving land disputes, and enhancing urban development, while being linked to the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry to better understand citizens’ needs and effectively allocate resources.

The chief minister emphasized the enduring relationship between Pakistan and China, highlighting the potential for collaboration in data, technology, and innovation. She expressed a vision for Punjab to become a key player in technology creation and innovation, building on the province’s status as Pakistan’s most AI-enabled region.

Maryam Nawaz also underscored the importance of data as a foundational infrastructure rather than a mere by-product, outlining plans for a sovereign cloud, digital identity, and AI-powered systems to enhance governance and public services. The chief minister concluded by inviting Chinese companies to invest in Punjab’s digital future, aligning with the vision of President Xi Jinping for shared prosperity through the digital economy.
