Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired a pivotal meeting of the Sub-Committee on Rightsizing of the Federal Government to evaluate the progress of the ongoing rightsizing exercise and to discuss measures for expediting the implementation of approved recommendations. The meeting, held in the presence of Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Dr. Musadik Malik, reviewed the advancement across eight waves of the rightsizing process and emphasized the importance of moving decisively towards implementation.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting revealed that Waves 1 to 4 of the rightsizing process have largely progressed following Cabinet approval, with follow-up ongoing in areas where recommendations have already been made. Recommendations for Waves 5 and 6 have been prepared and shared with the relevant authorities, while efforts on Waves 7 and 8 are ongoing. The Finance Minister underscored the importance of quantifying recurring savings and ensuring that the fiscal impact of the approved measures is fully captured in the budget and medium-term fiscal framework.
The committee discussed a broader approach to rightsizing, focusing on reviewing federal government functions and assessing where efficiency could be enhanced through institutional arrangements, devolution, and private-sector participation. The emphasis was placed on maintaining government resources focused on essential functions within a leaner and more efficient institutional framework.
The meeting also stressed the necessity for workload and activity analysis to guide decisions on institutional structures, functions, and staffing. The Finance Minister highlighted that the ultimate measurement of rightsizing should be based on improvements in efficiency, productivity, and service delivery, rather than mere reductions in government size.
Senator Dr. Musadik Malik, in consultation with Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Rightsizing, Mr. Salman Ahmad, advocated for a focused and time-bound implementation approach. They proposed the development of a clear action plan with defined timelines and responsibilities to translate approved recommendations into concrete implementation measures.
The Finance Minister directed that the momentum on the rightsizing agenda be maintained through close monitoring and timely implementation of approved measures. The aim is to achieve sustainable improvements in government efficiency, fiscal management, resource utilization, and service delivery. The meeting saw attendance from several key officials including the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Rightsizing, and Secretaries from various divisions.
