Federal Minister Emphasizes Preservation of Buddhist Heritage at International Vesak Day


Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to preserving its Buddhist and Gandhara heritage during the International Vesak Day 2026 event at the historic Taxila Museum. The minister, serving as the chief guest, underscored Pakistan’s commitment to cultural and spiritual heritage conservation.



According to Press Information Department, the event was attended by diplomats, monks, scholars, and visitors from countries including Thailand and Sri Lanka. In collaboration with the Government of Punjab and the embassies of Nepal, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, the gathering emphasized Pakistan’s role as a custodian of significant Buddhist legacies.



The ceremony showcased documentaries on Buddhism’s history, archaeological findings, and heritage preservation efforts in Pakistan. A documentary on Lumbini, presented by the Embassy of Nepal, received appreciation from attendees. Minister Khichi noted Vesak’s significance in commemorating the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha and stressed Taxila’s importance in Buddhist history.



Khichi reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to conserving its Buddhist heritage and promoting cultural tourism. He acknowledged international efforts in research and conservation and praised local leaders for their dedication to preserving the Gandhara Civilization. The minister also recognized the Tourism, Archaeology, and Museums Department Punjab for organizing the event.



Speakers from Thailand and Sri Lanka lauded Pakistan’s role in safeguarding Buddhist heritage and emphasized the importance of such events in enhancing international relations. The event concluded with a commitment to cultural diplomacy and the global promotion of Pakistan’s Buddhist heritage.
