Federal and Provincial Authorities Agree to Host Gandhara Conference in Pakistan in 2026


Islamabad: Federal and provincial authorities in Pakistan have principally agreed to organize the Gandhara Conference in 2026, focusing on the country’s Buddhist heritage, following a meeting led by Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The conference aims to showcase Pakistan’s cultural heritage and strengthen ties with Buddhist-majority countries.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting evaluated potential opportunities for hosting the conference amidst the government’s austerity measures. The decision to proceed with the preparations will be submitted to the Government for approval. Key attendees included the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Gandhara Task Force, Imran Shokat, Secretary of National Heritage and Culture, Asad Rehman Gillani, and Managing Director of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, Aftab Rana, among others.



Participants emphasized the importance of preparing a comprehensive plan for international visitors, highlighting the need for improved preservation and visitor facilities at Buddhist heritage sites. Discussions also covered the possibility of establishing direct air links with Buddhist-majority countries to enhance accessibility for attendees. The conference is set to feature cultural and heritage activities, potentially boosting economic activity and revenue.



Minister Khichi reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitating visa-on-arrival facilities and modern amenities for international guests. Provincial representatives expressed their support and anticipated the event’s role in promoting Pakistan’s cultural heritage globally. The conference is expected to attract numerous Buddhist monks and international participants, offering them a chance to explore Pakistan’s historical sites, including Taxila and Swat.
