Dr. Shamshad Akhtar Stresses Need for Fiscal Reforms in Pakistan

Islamabad, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, the Caretaker Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs, has emphasized the necessity of comprehensive fiscal reforms in Pakistan. During her keynote address on the nation’s economic challenges, she outlined the need for bold reforms to bridge the revenue-expenditure gap and propel the country towards development and prosperity.

According to Press Information Department, Dr. Akhtar highlighted five key vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s economy: unsustainable fiscal policies, increased reliance on public debt, potential climate shocks, lack of economic innovation and diversification, and failure to integrate with the global economy. She identified these areas as increasing Pakistan’s susceptibility to both domestic and global disruptions.

The Minister underscored five crucial reform areas to mitigate these vulnerabilities and foster sustainable growth. These include a complete overhaul of the government’s fiscal apparatus to reduce the revenue-expenditure gap, addressing structural weaknesses in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), reducing the national debt burden, and improving competitiveness and investment opportunities. Dr. Akhtar’s focus on these areas indicates a strategic approach to addressing Pakistan’s economic challenges, aiming for a resilient and dynamic economic future for the country.
