Delegation Discusses Child Rights Initiatives with Sindh Assembly Speaker


Islamabad: A delegation led by the Convenor of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child’s Rights (PCCR), Dr. Nikhat Shakeel, MNA, held a meeting with Syed Awais Qadir Shah, Speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, in Karachi. The meeting focused on establishing a Provincial Child Rights Caucus within the Sindh Assembly and developing a collaborative framework to safeguard children’s rights.



According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Dr. Nikhat Shakeel emphasized the urgent need to address the issue of 26.3 million out-of-school children, labeling it a “national emergency.” She stressed the necessity of ensuring that every child, regardless of gender or socio-economic status, has access to quality education and healthcare. Dr. Shakeel acknowledged Sindh’s efforts in combating malnutrition and enhancing healthcare through initiatives like the ChildLife Foundation emergency centers, urging for collective action to shape a future where children are valued and protected.



Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah highlighted the significance of eradicating polio and called for nationwide unity to eliminate the disease. He proposed hosting a “National Convention on Child Rights” at the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, aimed at bringing together policymakers, stakeholders, and child rights advocates to devise strategies addressing the complex challenges faced by children across Pakistan.



The delegation expressed support for the Speaker’s proposal and commended Sindh’s proactive approach to child rights. They pledged their backing for the proposed convention and wider legislative efforts. The meeting concluded with Speaker Shah assuring that the Provincial Child Rights Caucus and the proposed National Convention would act as catalysts for change.



The delegation included MNAs Mr. Hassaan Sabir and Syed Ali Qasim Gillani, along with officers from the National Assembly Secretariat.
