ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani attended a commemorative event marking the 32nd anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, held at a local hotel in Islamabad. Gilani, serving as the chief guest, described the tragedy as one of the darkest chapters in modern history, where over a million lives were lost in the span of just one hundred days, leaving behind shattered families and scarred communities.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the event was organized by the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in Pakistan. Addressing the gathering, Gilani expressed grief and solidarity with the Rwandan people and paid tribute to their resilience and journey towards unity, reconciliation, and national rebuilding. He commended Rwanda’s leadership and people for setting a global example of healing and progress.
Gilani drew parallels between the Rwandan genocide and Pakistan’s own painful experiences during its independence, emphasizing shared experiences that strengthen empathy and solidarity between nations. He highlighted the importance of remembrance as a call to conscience and action, noting that Rwanda’s experience serves as a reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred.
The Chairman Senate reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human dignity, stressing the importance of standing against injustice. He called on the international community to promote inclusive governance, tolerance, and education that nurtures empathy and respect, ensuring the global pledge of “Never Again” is upheld.
The event was attended by federal ministers, ambassadors, parliament members, media representatives, and individuals from various sectors. Gilani extended gratitude to the Rwandan High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ms. Fatou Hareiman, reaffirming his solidarity with her and the people of Rwanda.
