Canadian Police Close to Arresting Suspects in Sikh Leader’s Assassination

Karachi, Canadian authorities are reportedly on the verge of arresting two individuals suspected of involvement in the June murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. As per a Canadian newspaper report, these suspects have been under police surveillance and could face arrest within weeks.

According to Kashmir Media Service, The Globe and Mail, citing three anonymous sources, reported that the two suspected killers have remained in Canada since the assassination of Nijjar. They have been under close watch by the police for several months, with their arrest anticipated to happen soon.

The report also indicated that the police are expected to reveal details about the assassins’ involvement and their alleged connections to the Indian government once formal charges are laid. This development is significant, as it may potentially expose international dimensions to the case.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a 45-year-old leader of the Khalistan Movement, which advocates for an independent homeland for Sikhs by separating Punjab from India, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the parking lot of a Gurdwara in Surrey city, Canada.

In a related development, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a Parliament session in September, announced the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in Nijjar’s killing. This statement has since strained the diplomatic relations between India and Canada.

Furthermore, in November, a U.S. indictment exposed a thwarted plot to assassinate Canadian-American Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, adding more complexity to the situation. These events highlight ongoing tensions and the intricate geopolitical implications surrounding the Sikh diaspora and their movements.

The impending arrests and subsequent legal proceedings are expected to shed further light on the circumstances and motivations behind Nijjar’s assassination.
