Imphal, Two Indian army personnel were killed and two others critically injured in an attack in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur, a state in India known for its violent conflicts. The attack was carried out in Moreh town by suspected Kuki guerrillas.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased army men were identified as Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei and Takhellambam Sailesh. The attack involved the use of bombs and gunfire at an Indian army post near a State Bank of India branch in Moreh. Additionally, the assailants fired RPG shells at a makeshift commando post, resulting in damage to several vehicles parked in the vicinity.
The attack in Manipur comes amidst heightened tensions in the region. The Manipur government had imposed a total curfew from 12 am on January 16 in various areas of the state, including Tengnoupal, in response to the ongoing violence. The Kuki tribes, involved in the conflict, have accused the Indian police of attacking Kuki civilians.
The violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, has led to over 180 deaths and the internal displacement of thousands. This latest attack underscores the continuing instability in the region and the challenges faced in addressing the demands for independence from Indian rule by local guerilla groups.
