Islamabad: Environmental activist Almas Kasmani has been appointed as the Ambassador for the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) for her work in restoring coastal mangroves, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Wednesday.
According to Press Information Department, at a certificate distribution ceremony, Minister Chaudhry acknowledged Kasmani, a resident of Rehri Goth and founder of Saltwater Marina, for her dedication to mangrove restoration and her involvement in community workshops, biodiversity documentation, and youth-led plantation drives. Kasmani also promotes eco-tourism and represents Pakistan at international climate forums.
Kasmani has successfully restored 4,000 mangrove plants and aims to plant 100,000 more in the coming year, with suitable areas already identified for this effort, the minister stated. In recognition of her contributions to marine conservation and the blue economy, Chaudhry presented Kasmani and her team with shields and certificates.
The minister further commended the female employees of Karachi Port Trust who ensured smooth port operations alongside their male colleagues during the Eid holidays, contributing to the maritime sector’s effectiveness. He noted the emergence of positive changes in coastal regions, highlighting progress in maritime and environmental initiatives.
Junaid Chaudhry emphasized the crucial role women play in promoting sustainable water resource use, marking an increase in community involvement in conservation efforts along Pakistan’s coastline.
