ISLAMABAD: Acting President of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, has underscored the significance of International Labour Day as a global symbol of hard work, struggle, and social justice. In a statement, he emphasized the day’s historical importance and its role in honoring the sacrifices of workers around the world.
According to Press Information Department, Gilani reflected on the origins of May 1, tracing it back to the Haymarket incident in Chicago, where workers demanded an eight-hour workday. He highlighted the pivotal role this event played in shaping labour rights movements globally and reiterated the importance of recognizing workers’ sacrifices.
Gilani stressed the essential link between national development and the efforts of the working class, asserting that economic stability and prosperity depend on the well-being of workers. He called for the protection of workers’ rights, as emphasized by both Islamic teachings and the Pakistani Constitution, and urged the state to ensure dignified employment, fair wages, and safe working conditions.
Acknowledging the contributions of overseas Pakistani workers, Gilani assured that their rights remain a priority for the government. He also commended Parliament’s efforts in enacting labour-friendly legislation and promised continued efforts for legislative improvements and institutional reforms.
Concluding his message, Gilani reaffirmed the commitment of the Pakistan Peoples Party and Parliament to uphold workers’ rights and promote social justice, particularly in the face of current global economic challenges.
