Srinagar: The detention of Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent climate activist, by Delhi Police has led to significant unrest in Ladakh, where a complete strike was observed across the region. The local community is protesting not only Wangchuk’s detention but also advocating for greater autonomy under the Sixth Schedule.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance organized the shutdown. These groups are pushing for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, aiming to safeguard the region’s cultural and land rights from external influences. Wangchuk’s arrest occurred while he was leading a march from Leh to Delhi, aimed at advocating for these rights.
The protest saw over 120 individuals, including Wangchuk, detained at the Delhi-Haryana border on September 30, 2024, as they tried to advance their cause to the central government. In response, massive support rallies were held in Leh’s NDS Stadium, where community leaders like Chhering Dorje Lakrook, president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, called for unity and resistance against what they perceive as injustices inflicted by state actions.
Additionally, Sajjad Kargili, a noted social activist from Kargil, has commenced a hunger strike following his detention, demanding that the Modi government address the grievances of the Ladakh community rather than suppressing them. The Kargil Democratic Alliance has echoed these sentiments, denouncing the detentions as a breach of fundamental democratic rights and freedoms.
