UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting Co-Hosted by Pakistan and South Korea


Islamabad: The Ministerial Preparatory Meeting for the United Nations Peacekeeping, co-hosted by Pakistan and the Republic of South Korea, is currently underway in Islamabad. This two-day event aims to lay the groundwork for the upcoming UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, next month.



Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under Secretary General for Peace Operations, opened the meeting by expressing his satisfaction with the broad support for UN Peacekeeping efforts. Lacroix emphasized the challenges and risks that peacekeepers face and noted that technology will play a crucial role in enhancing operational effectiveness and security.



Atul Khare, the UN Under Secretary General for Operational Support, acknowledged Pakistan’s significant contribution as one of the largest providers of troops and police to UN Peacekeeping Missions. Khare emphasized the importance of promoting the inclusion of women in peace and security initiatives as a priority for the United Nations.



UN Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar highlighted the need for collaboration to ensure that UN police forces are adequately prepared and equipped. Shahkar stressed the importance of human rights-compliant and gender-responsive policing to protect and empower communities.



The meeting in Islamabad is a precursor to the Berlin event, setting the stage for more in-depth discussions and decisions on the future of UN Peacekeeping operations.
