Geneva: UN experts have condemned Israel’s bombing campaign against Lebanon, which took place just hours after a ceasefire agreement was brokered by Pakistan between the United States and Iran. According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the experts criticized the strikes, describing them as a violation of international law and a significant threat to regional stability.
The experts emphasized that the bombing, which targeted over 150 locations in Lebanon on April 8, resulted in the deaths of at least 303 people and injuries to 1,150 others. Many of the strikes hit densely populated areas in central Beirut, causing extensive environmental damage and significant civilian displacement. Since March 2, the Israeli military actions have reportedly killed more than 2,000 people and displaced over one million individuals, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis.
Furthermore, the experts condemned Hezbollah’s cross-border attacks on Israeli civilians and called for adherence to the 2024 ceasefire agreement. They urged Israel to halt military operations, comply with international resolutions, and facilitate the return of displaced persons. The United States was also urged to leverage its influence to de-escalate the situation and encourage compliance with humanitarian laws.
Internationally, the experts called for the suspension of arms transfers to Israel and for increased support for Lebanon’s humanitarian needs, highlighting the urgency of a USD 308 million Flash Appeal to aid the crisis.
