Standing Committee on Energy Focuses on Improving Electricity Regulations in Islamabad

Islamabad: In an effort to address persistent issues in the power sector, the Standing Committee on Energy (Power Division), chaired by Mr. Muhammad Idrees, MNA, convened today at the Parliament House. The committee took several decisive steps aimed at mitigating the impact of electricity policies on consumers.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the meeting highlighted the establishment of a Special Task Force assigned to review existing contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) aimed at reducing the financial burden on electricity consumers. The committee expressed appreciation for this initiative but emphasized the need for the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) to implement more rigorous measures to prevent overcharging and unnecessary load-shedding across different regions.

Furthermore, the committee has requested detailed disclosures of all contracts with IPPs in its next meeting, signaling a move towards greater transparency in energy dealings. This request comes amid growing concerns over the performance of K-Electric, which has been a significant point of contention due to customer complaints. To address these issues more directly, the committee plans to hold its next session in Karachi, where they can assess the situation on the ground.

During the session, the Secretary of Energy briefly outlined the steps being taken to combat overbilling and other service-related issues, highlighting the challenges faced by the ministry in enforcing these changes.

The meeting saw active participation from various members of the National Assembly, emphasizing the high priority of energy issues on the legislative agenda. The committee’s actions today indicate a proactive approach in resolving the long-standing challenges within Pakistan’s power sector, with an eye towards improving both regulatory oversight and consumer satisfaction.
