New York: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Minister of State, Syed Tariq Fatemi, engaged in a notable dialogue with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Philemon Yang, in New York. The meeting addressed a spectrum of pressing global issues, including the situations in Kashmir and Palestine, as well as potential reforms to the UN Security Council.
Fatemi highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to international collaboration, referencing the “Pact for the Future” adopted last year. He asserted that the pact aims to rejuvenate global cooperation across critical sectors such as development, finance, and international financial systems, with a strong emphasis on partnerships with developing countries.
During the discussions, Fatemi outlined Pakistan’s objectives as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. He reiterated support for a Security Council that is more democratic and representative, advocating for reforms to be achieved through a process that includes broad consensus among UN member states.
Additionally, Fatemi expressed Pakistan’s backing of the “Uniting for Consensus” group’s proposal to expand the number of non-permanent members in the Security Council. This proposal seeks to ensure equitable geographical representation and enhance accountability.
The conversation also covered the protracted issue of Jammu and Kashmir. Fatemi briefed the UNGA President on the ongoing situation, emphasizing the Indian occupation and the denial of self-determination for the Kashmiri people, thereby reaffirming Pakistan’s position on the matter.
The meeting underscored Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to engage with international stakeholders on key global challenges and its commitment to fostering international cooperation.
