Repression Escalates in Kashmir Under Modi, Says Activist Mushaal Mullick

Islamabad: Mushaal Hussein Mullick, the wife of jailed Kashmiri leader Mohammad Yasin Malik, has spoken out against the escalating repression in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. Mullick provided a distressing overview of human rights abuses during a roundtable discussion at the Institute of Regional Studies in Islamabad.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mullick presented staggering figures detailing the human rights violations since 1989, including the deaths of 96,320 Kashmiris and the gang rapes of 11,264 women. She accused Indian security forces of perpetrating mass killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and suppressing free speech, with over 900,000 troops imposing a severe military siege on 8 million Kashmiris.

The discussion, which included human rights advocates like Altaf Wani and Barrister Needa Salam, underscored the dire human rights situation in Kashmir. Mullick called for international intervention to compel India to lift its military siege and reverse its policies initiated since the revocation of Kashmir’s special status on August 5, 2019.

The roundtable highlighted the urgent need for global action to address what participants described as an escalating human rights crisis in the region, urging international bodies and foreign governments to take a stand against the abuses reported.
