Kolkata: Over 110 people were arrested, and dozens were injured as police opened fire on protesters in West Bengal, India, during demonstrations against the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Clashes began in Murshidabad district after Friday prayers, where people assembled to peacefully protest the recent legislation. The police responded with tear gas and live bullets, leading to widespread chaos and injuries.
The unrest quickly spread to other districts, including Malda, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly. Protesters in these areas blocked roads, threw stones, and set several vehicles, including police vans, ablaze.
“Around 70 people were arrested from Suti, and 41 more from Samserganj in connection with the protests,” a senior police official stated. He noted that the atmosphere in the violence-stricken areas remains tense.
To curb further unrest, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 and suspended internet services in several parts of the state. Meanwhile, police confirmed that a teenage boy injured, allegedly in police firing during the Suti clashes, has been hospitalized in Kolkata.
