Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has introduced fifteen eco-smart electric vehicles to the Islamabad Traffic Police, marking a significant step towards environmentally sustainable transportation. The initiative aims to mitigate fuel import costs amid rising international fuel prices while enhancing traffic management in the capital.
According to Radio Pakistan: At the handover ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the potential foreign exchange savings the new fleet could offer. He also called on provincial governments and other law enforcement agencies to consider integrating similar electric vehicles into their operations. The vehicles, each staffed with a captain, a male and female responder, and a driver, are set to be deployed on major city roads to improve traffic flow.
The environmentally friendly vehicles can travel between 350 to 400 kilometers on a full charge. Fast charging is expected to take between 60 to 90 minutes, while regular charging may require six to eight hours. The electric vehicles are anticipated to save approximately 0.5 million rupees per month per vehicle compared to traditional petrol-powered counterparts. The cost of the vehicles is projected to be recuperated within 13 to 14 months. This development forms part of the federal government’s broader strategy for modern traffic management in Islamabad. During the event, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi presented a model of the electric vehicle to the Prime Minister, who also conducted an inspection of the new addition to the traffic police fleet.
