Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the expedited formulation of a comprehensive National Agriculture Policy, emphasizing collaboration with provincial authorities. During a review meeting on the restructuring of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and the implementation of agricultural reforms, the Prime Minister underscored the sector’s critical role in achieving sustainable economic growth.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister instructed the creation of an apex forum for agriculture, which will convene monthly to ensure effective implementation of the Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan. Additionally, he called for a nationwide awareness campaign for the Zarkhez-e Agricultural Loan Programme to enhance farmers’ access to agricultural financing. Efforts to transform the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council into a leading center for agricultural research were also highlighted.
The Prime Minister identified essential measures such as the provision of quality seeds, modern farming technologies, and timely access to water and fertilizers to boost per-acre crop yields. He stressed the importance of focusing on value addition, improved warehousing, and modern storage systems.
The meeting revealed that the National Agricultural Research Centre has begun pilot production of multigrain flour, and an Artificial Intelligence-based application is being developed to aid farmers in managing crop pests and diseases. Financial support will be provided by the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited to facilitate farmers’ loan access.
The meeting also noted the recent approval of the National Seed Policy and the National Agriculture Biotechnology Policy. Consultations on the Pakistan National Olive Value Chain Policy have been completed, and the policy is set to be submitted for approval. Ongoing discussions are focusing on a National Wheat Policy and various livestock sector policies.
