Pakistan to Export Buffalo Genetics to China in $25 Million Annual Deal

Islamabad: Pakistan has secured a significant agreement to export buffalo genetic material to China, marking a milestone for the country’s livestock sector. This development comes as the Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, announced the finalization of a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) with the Royal Group of China, facilitating the export of high-value buffalo genetics.

According to Press Information Department, this agreement follows extensive diplomatic and technical negotiations led by Minister Hussain and Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi. The collaboration with Chinese counterparts has opened new avenues for Pakistan’s livestock exports, particularly highlighting the country’s superior buffalo genetics.

The Royal Group of China has established a facility in Pakistan to manage the collection, processing, and export of buffalo genetic material, including embryos and semen. This initiative is seen as a step toward elevating Pakistan’s livestock industry to an international level. The country’s renowned Nili-Ravi buffalo breed, known for its milk production capabilities, will play a central role in this venture.

Initial projections suggest that China will import buffalo embryos worth approximately $5 million from Pakistan, with annual exports expected to reach $25 million. This deal is anticipated to generate significant foreign exchange and open new markets for Pakistan’s livestock sector.

Minister Hussain emphasized that the agreement upholds Pakistan’s national interests and safeguards its genetic resources. The Material Transfer Agreement ensures compliance with international protocols and protects Pakistan’s intellectual property rights, ensuring fair distribution of future commercial benefits.
