Pakistan Strengthens Trade Commitment with EU Amid Regional Challenges: PM Assures Continued Efforts


ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing trade and investment relations with the European Union, as conveyed to a visiting EU delegation. According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister met with senior EU officials and business representatives in Islamabad, highlighting the significance of the EU as Pakistan’s largest trading partner and a primary export destination.



The delegation, led by Director (Asia Pacific) of the European Commission’s Directorate General of International Partnerships, Mr. Peteris Ustubs, included notable figures such as Ms. Thourya Triki of the EU Investment Bank, Vice President of Adidas Manuel Pauser, Vice President of Andritz Karl Shloegelbauer, and Regional Director of IKEA Dieter Metkke. The visit coincides with the EU-Pakistan Business Forum, aimed at bolstering business-to-business ties.



Prime Minister Sharif expressed optimism that the forum would further enhance trade and investment between Pakistan and the EU. He affirmed the government’s dedication to economic stabilization despite regional challenges, including the impact of rising oil prices in the Middle East. Sharif also referenced his recent discussions with EU Council President Antonio Costa on regional security and strengthening relations.



The EU delegation commended the Prime Minister’s efforts towards regional peace and appreciated Pakistan’s cooperation in hosting the business forum. They highlighted the potential for growth in sectors such as energy and IT, with more than six hundred B2B meetings planned at the event.



The meeting was attended by high-level Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering EU-Pakistan trade relations.
