ISLAMABAD: Pakistan observes National Minorities Day each year to recognize the contributions of minority communities to the nation’s progress and prosperity. The day underscores Pakistan’s commitment to inclusivity and acknowledges the historical significance of minority rights in the country.

According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his message for National Minorities Day, emphasized the integral role minorities play in Pakistan’s national fabric. He highlighted the enduring legacy of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s words from 1947, which affirmed the rights of minorities and their freedom of worship. This annual observance reaffirms Pakistan’s dedication to unity, peaceful coexistence, and equal opportunities for all citizens.

The Constitution of Pakistan guarantees minority rights, supported by a legal framework that protects places of worship and prohibits discrimination. The National Commission for Minorities Act of 2025 marks a significant step, with the Ministry of Human Rights working to establish an independent commission to oversee minority rights. Efforts to promote interfaith harmony and social cohesion include the Interfaith Harmony Policy of 2025 and the National Policy for Countering Violent Extremism of 2024. The introduction of the National Action Plan for Human Rights 2026 further demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting minority communities.

In collaboration with provincial governments, institutions, and civil society, Pakistan’s government aims to ensure equal opportunities and foster a peaceful, tolerant, and united society for all its citizens.
