Pakistan Launches Fund to Strengthen Climate Resilience

Islamabad: The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination announced the launch of the Challenge Fund for Climate Resilient Infrastructure, aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s adaptability to climate challenges. The fund is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and will be executed by GIZ Pakistan and Adam Smith International.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the Challenge Fund is part of the Pak-German Climate and Energy Partnership, integrating efforts to implement Pakistan’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP). This comprehensive plan addresses climate vulnerabilities and resilience across sectors like agriculture, water resources, and urban planning.

The fund will prioritize projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad Capital Territory, areas facing climate challenges such as flooding and water scarcity. It will support up to five projects that offer scalable and sustainable solutions within a year.

Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, emphasized the fund’s role in empowering local governments to develop infrastructure that meets sustainable development goals. Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Climate Change Ministry, stated the initiative would enhance infrastructure resilience against climate-related disasters.

GIZ Pakistan’s Country Director, Maria-José Poddey, highlighted the initiative’s goal to build capacity alongside infrastructure. Zulfiqar Younas, additional secretary-I at the ministry, remarked on Pakistan’s commitment to innovative solutions for climate vulnerabilities.

The Challenge Fund represents a significant step in addressing climate risks, fostering collaboration, and promoting sustainable development in Pakistan. For details, interested parties are encouraged to visit www.challengefundpk.com.
