Pakistan Calls for Unified Support for UN Peacekeeping Missions

Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has urged the United Nations Security Council to provide unified and consistent support for all peace operations, emphasizing the importance of clear mandates and adequate resources.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting, co-hosted by Pakistan and the Republic of Korea, Mr. Dar highlighted the need for troop-contributing countries to be actively involved in the formulation of peacekeeping missions’ mandates from the outset. He stressed that these mandates must be clear, focused, and grounded in field realities.

Mr. Dar noted that peacekeeping missions should not be tasked with excessive responsibilities without the necessary resources to fulfill them. He advocated for deployment decisions to be based on professional standards and track records to enhance performance.

The Deputy Prime Minister also called for strengthened regional and cross-regional partnerships, citing the recent Security Council Resolution 2719 on financing African Union-led operations as a significant advancement. He proposed exploring closer collaboration with organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Mr. Dar concluded by stating that peacekeeping should be integrated with broader peace-building efforts and anchored in long-term engagement to ensure enduring peace.
