National Assembly Continues Federal Budget Debate Amid Diplomatic Achievements and Economic Challenges

Islamabad: The National Assembly engaged in an extensive debate over the federal budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, focusing on economic recovery, diplomatic achievements, and the country’s strategic priorities. Key government ministers addressed the assembly, highlighting the positive trajectory of the economy, recent diplomatic successes, and ongoing challenges.

According to Radio Pakistan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif emphasized the positive impact of decreasing international petroleum prices on the common man. He described a peace agreement set to be signed between the United States and Iran as a significant diplomatic victory for Pakistan, enhancing the nation’s international standing. Asif also discussed lifting restrictions on Iranian oil and gas exports, which could benefit Pakistan substantially.

The debate saw participation from various ministers. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf praised the budget as balanced and focused on economic progression. Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi endorsed Pakistan as a safe investment destination, crediting leadership efforts in fostering peace between Iran and the U.S. Meanwhile, Minister for National Health Services Mustafa Kamal highlighted the need for population control and praised the removal of General Sales Tax on contraceptives as a positive step.

Discussions also touched on regional security, with Asif expressing concerns over Afghanistan’s unwillingness to assure that its territory will not be used against Pakistan. He reiterated the importance of Pakistan’s sacrifices in combating terrorism.

However, opposition voices criticized the budget for lacking provisions for youth, agriculture, and industries, and questioned its ability to meet revenue targets. Opposition member Sana Ullah Khan Mastikhel and others called for increased salary raises and greater employment opportunities. Concerns were also raised about declining foreign direct investment and the overall pro-people orientation of the budget.
