Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Advocates for Mosques as Hubs of Societal Engagement in Kashmir


Srinagar: In a significant speech during the renovation ceremony of the historic Haji Abdul Salam Qalandar Sahib Masjid, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq highlighted the integral role mosques should play in fostering educational, social, and political activities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.



According to Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, during his address in the Kadal area of Srinagar, proposed that masajid evolve beyond their traditional roles to become centers of social reform and community cohesion. Drawing inspiration from the Prophet’s Mosque, he urged for inclusivity within the masajid, with open doors for all Muslim sects and designated areas for women to participate fully in religious activities.



The Mirwaiz emphasized the importance of establishing religious schools or madrasas adjacent to every mosque to educate the youth in both contemporary and religious sciences. He voiced concerns over the increase in social evils and called for masjid imams, preachers, and local committees to actively engage in community betterment initiatives. His return to the area after several years was met with a warm reception by a large crowd, indicating his influential role in the community.
