Karachi: In a message on National Minorities Day, Karamullah Waqasi, spokesperson for the Mayor of Karachi and the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentary Leader in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, emphasized the indispensable role played by minority communities in Pakistan’s development and national unity. According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Waqasi acknowledged the contributions of minorities in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and civil services since the nation’s inception, highlighting their integral part in the country’s progress.

President Asif Ali Zardari first announced the observance of National Minorities Day on August 11 during his tenure in 2009, as a commitment to safeguarding minority rights and fostering religious harmony. Karamullah Waqasi pointed out that the initiatives taken by President Zardari, including a five percent job quota and reserved seats for minorities in legislative bodies, are practical demonstrations of the country’s dedication to equal opportunities for all citizens.

Waqasi further stressed the importance of implementing the employment quota effectively to empower minority youth and enhance their participation in national development. He also highlighted the necessity for minorities’ active involvement in politics, advocating for opportunities for their advancement in mainstream political roles.

The Pakistan Peoples Party spokesperson reiterated the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for a Pakistan where all citizens are treated equally, regardless of religion or ethnicity. He noted the significant contributions of minority communities in Karachi, a multicultural hub, recognizing the ongoing Minorities Day program at Frere Hall as a tribute to their enduring services.
