KMC to Undertake Extensive Drain Cleaning Before Monsoon

Karachi: In a significant move to enhance the city’s readiness for the approaching monsoon season, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is set to initiate a thorough cleaning drive of all major storm-water drains throughout the city. This effort aims to ensure the seamless flow of rainwater and reduce the threat of urban flooding.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, this decision was made in a high-level meeting led by Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, which focused on reviewing the progress of ongoing development projects and municipal services. The meeting concentrated on monsoon preparedness, civic infrastructure, and strategies to improve Karachi’s drainage systems.

Municipal Commissioner KMC, Abrar Jaffar, briefed the Mayor that tenders for the desilting and cleaning of major drains have been issued, with bid openings scheduled for Monday. Once the procurement process concludes, work will begin immediately to ensure all major drains are cleared before the monsoon rains arrive.

KMC has allocated Rs. 600 million for the citywide drain cleaning effort, demonstrating the organization’s dedication to protecting citizens and public infrastructure during the rainy season. Mayor Wahab instructed that a third-party consultant be hired to independently monitor the cleaning process to ensure transparency, quality control, and timely completion. He stressed the importance of strict oversight to ensure effective use of public funds and adherence to high standards.

Financial Advisor KMC, Gulzar Abro, outlined the district-wise fund allocation for the drain cleaning campaign, with specific amounts designated for each district. Mayor Wahab emphasized the necessity of maintaining functional drains to support the city’s extensive development program and protect both completed and ongoing infrastructure projects.

Mayor Wahab asserted the importance of delivering improved results compared to last year’s monsoon, urging all departments to complete the cleaning operation efficiently and on time. He highlighted the need for proactive planning and coordinated municipal efforts to safeguard residents from rain-related issues and reaffirmed KMC’s commitment to enhancing civic services and building a more resilient Karachi.

The meeting included participation from Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffar, Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, DG TS Tariq Mughal, Director Media Daniyal Siyal, and other senior KMC officials.
