Lahore: Pakistan Television’s first female announcer, Kanwal Naseer, is being remembered today on her fourth death anniversary. Naseer, who became an iconic figure in the media landscape, broke barriers in a field traditionally dominated by men, leaving an indelible mark on Pakistani broadcasting.
Born in Lahore in 1948, Naseer was the daughter of Mohni Hameed, a revered personality in radio known affectionately as Apa Shameem. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Naseer embarked on her media career at the young age of 17, a move that would see her contribute to both Pakistan Television (PTV) and Radio Pakistan for five decades.
Throughout her illustrious career, Naseer achieved several firsts, becoming the first female anchor, newscaster, and announcer on PTV. Her groundbreaking work began with her first announcement on November 26, 1964, a moment that paved the way for future generations of female broadcasters in the country.
In recognition of her contributions, Naseer was honored with the Pride of Performance and numerous other national awards, testifying to her influence and dedication to the media industry. Her legacy continues to inspire aspiring broadcasters and anchors across Pakistan.
