London: A delegation from the Jammu Kashmir Self Determination Movement International (JKSDMI), led by Chairman Raja Najabat Hussain, has submitted a petition to Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, urging intervention in the ongoing Kashmir dispute.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the petition demands the immediate release of all Kashmiri political prisoners in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). It also calls for an international investigation into human rights violations in the region and reaffirms the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
The petition advocates for a parliamentary debate on the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, which removed the special status of IIOJK. It urges international oversight and calls for an independent investigation into human rights abuses, as documented in the United Nations reports of 2018 and 2019.
Highlighting a deteriorating human rights situation, the petition points to arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances as ongoing issues. The JKSDMI delegation has appealed to the UK government to prioritize justice in its foreign policy concerning Kashmir.
The petition also brings attention to the UK’s historical and moral responsibility in the Kashmir dispute, originating from the 1947 partition of the subcontinent. With a British Kashmiri population exceeding one million, the issue remains significant for many in the UK, who continue to express concern over human rights violations in IIOJK.
