Islamabad: Japan has committed 350 million Japanese Yen to fund the Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Program for the fiscal year 2026 in Pakistan. The initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of Pakistani government officials through higher education opportunities in Japan. A formal signing ceremony took place in Islamabad, where officials from both countries exchanged agreements to solidify the collaboration.

According to the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan, the JDS Program, which began in 2018, is designed to strengthen the administrative competencies of Pakistan’s government by offering scholarships for Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at premier Japanese universities. The program targets Pakistani officers engaged in developing social and economic policies, aiming to nurture future leaders who will facilitate bilateral understanding and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.

During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi emphasized the program’s focus on investing in human capital as a sustainable national investment. He highlighted the transformative potential of sending Pakistani civil servants to Japan, where they gain new knowledge and perspectives to benefit Pakistan’s development. To date, over 100 officers have participated, with more than 80 having completed their studies and returned to contribute to their home country’s progress.

Shinozaki Yusuke, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan Office, expressed hopes that the collaboration would bolster Pakistan’s institutional capacity and contribute to sustainable development. He noted that the program aligns with JICA’s goals of fostering balanced and stable regional development through human resource enhancement.
